How does stress affect health?
Our bodies are designed to experience stress and allow us to react to it. It helps us to stay alert, keeps us motivated and sharpens our senses to be ready and avoid danger. If we continue to face challenges without relieving ourselves or relaxing, our stressors will increase and create health problems such as: headaches, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, muscle aches and pain, sexual dysfunction and sleep issues. With emotional stress we can suffer from: depression, anxiety, panic attacks and worry. Our bodies and mind return to normal to a relax state, but with modern and fast lifestyles, we rarely shut off the stressors and continue to be on high alert and over time, chronic stress can lead to serious health problems.
How do you relieve stress?
There are many things people can do to relieve stress. One of the important methods is meditation. Meditation is training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. Meditation is learning a new skill like exercising a muscle that you may have never worked out before. It takes practice to get comfortable. Most meditations begin by sitting quietly closing the eyes, calming the mind and focus on breathing. When we meditate, we are essentially cultivating awareness and compassion; we are training the mind to stop being easily distracted and instead be more focused in the present moment. Using the breath as our anchor in the moment, we simply sit and gradually learn to let thoughts and feelings come and go.
